The HeliochronometerThere are opportunities to have your instrument engraved with a motto of your choice (Tempus Fugit, etc.) and, should you wish, with the location of your house or a special event or date, etc. As a discouragement to theft, the Standard model, without any loss of its essential alignment and orientation, can safely be removed indoors whenever not in use. |

The Classic Horizontal SundialThis is also crafted in solid brass. Each one is unique to its geographical position. Only this way can accurate time be derived. The angle of the gnomon relates directly to the latitude and the engraving of the ‘clock face’ graticule takes into the account both the latitude and the longitude. As a consequence of this precision, the shadow of the gnomon will indicate precise solar time – leaving just one problem still to be addressed. That posed by the Equation of Time, a phenomena resulting from the apparent vagaries of the earth’s rotation around the sun. These cause time errors, consistent year upon year, but amounting to plus or minus 15 minutes per day! To cope with this, a graph is engraved at the bottom of the ‘clock face’. This identifies, day by day, the minutes you must add or subtract in order to derive accurate ‘watch’ time. An engraved footnote reminds one to make allowance, when relevant, for Summer Time.
